Raymonda was created at the Imperial Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg in January 1898 and is the last great work of Marius Petipa. Russian Bashkir State Ballet Theatre’s version however is choreographed by Elena Chernyshova who was Artistic Director and Principal Ballet Choreographer of Vienna Statsopera and Principal Choreographer of American Ballet Theatre. The ballet is based on the scenario of Lydia Pashkova. The story is set in Medieval France. Raymonda the niece of a countess is betrothed to a knight, Jean de Brienne. In her dream a rich sheikh, Abderakhman pursues Raymonda and terrifies her. Later at the feast she meets the Sheikh who wants to abduct her. Jean de Brienne challenges him to a duel; the sheikh loses. He kills himself. The performance will be accompanied by a full symphony orchestra.
