This show is a total whirlwind, a dynamic fusion of hip-hop, rollerblading, contemporary dance, and digital artistry. Performers blend movement with cutting-edge technology using lighting to create a visually stunning spectacle that redefines modern dance.
Pixel is the brainchild of dance and culture impresario Mourad Merzouki, who for the past 30 years has been a crucial figure in the hip-hop dance scene. Circus school and martial arts training informs his choreography, which can range from capoeira to contortion, and to which he adds fine arts, video and live music.
“What makes his work undeniably effective,” said one reviewer, “is an adept ability to weave each seemingly contrasting genre into a wave of movement so cohesive one is apt to find themselves lulled into a durational trance where reality and invention are nearly indistinguishable.”
